The Greeks are one of the iconic aspects of the Ancient period of historical wargaming. Rather than focus on a particular Greek army, I have built up a collection of models suitable to represent most of the different Greek forces except those with a very unique style (e.g. Sparta). In line with this “generic” approach I kept city-specific insignia of all the models.
The collection can be used to build any of the I/52a-i (except b) Early Hoplite Greek (680-450BC) or II/5b-i Later Hoplite Greek (450-275BC) with the exception of the visually distinct Spartans that have their own army. In a pinch, some of the earlier lists such as I/30c Geometric Greek (724-650BC) or I/35d Cypriots and Phoenicians (489-332BC) could be covered as well though the clothing would be a bit off for that period. Finally, fielding the Hoplites as Pikes rather than Spears can allow an expansion into the non-Spartan II/31 Hellenistic Greek (275-146BC) lists. In most cases there are enough models to play Greek civil wars if the two forces don’t both use heavy Hoplite formations. For example, II/5b Athenians could push their mighty Phalanx against II/5f Phocian light infantry formations.
The models are mostly Xyston with a few Corvus Belli used for variety.
Cavalry: The Cavalry models include a General for those army lists where the General is mounted.
Light Horse: The Light Horse models are excess from the Thracian army re-painted to blend into the generic Greek white uniform.
Spears: Whether fielded as Spears or Pikes, the Greek Hoplites are the iconic core of the army. The shield icons are decals form various sources. The shields are glossy as they were supposed to be in real life but this causes a lot of optical effects during photography. Apart from shiny reflections, the white shields sometime show a yellow ring around the decals. I think this is an angle specific effect during the photography step (likely enhanced during image processing) as such yellowing is completely invisible in real life.
Light Auxilia: Using 3-model bases, the Light Auxilia are an intermediate step between full Hoplites and the practically unarmoured Psiloi. I gave them small round shields without decals to distinguish them visually from the Hoplites.
Psiloi: The Psiloi are skirmishing infantry armed mostly with throwing spears. The large number of elements allows me to field entire light infantry armies such as II/5f Phocians or even the later II/31j Aitolian (the “look” of a naked guy with a wooden stick is remarkably stable across history…).
Artillery: Two generic stone throwers provide the Artillery elements. They are used almost exclusively by the Phocains but seemed like the right unit to get for completeness sake.
Camp: The Greek Camp is a work in progress. The base is an old Greek ruin build up from Hirst Art bricks that seemed suitable. I am looking for some Greek scholar type figures to use as a Camp Follower base.
