ToEG A year in review

So how am I doing in this Tales of Epic Gamers challenge? First of all, it has definitely achieved its goal of motivating me to keep chipping away on the big Lost and the Damned army. That’s a fantastic result for somebody like me who normally bounced from project to project. The plan in August was to complete about 11,000 points of EPIC LatD duringt the ToEG challenge, plus about 4,000 points worth of “left-over” models for their cousins in the Black Legion chaos list. Against that 15,000 points goal I have so far completed:

August: 965 points (but also based and converted the first half of the overall army)
September: 3520 points (mostly Khorne and a few other units)
October: 1300 points (mostly Undivided and some remaining Khorne units)
November: 1910 points (finished Khorne and most of Undivided, based/converted the other half of the army)
December: 860 points (random small stuff cleared off my desk, started basing/converting my Eldar, Adeptus Mechanicus and Squat armies for the next few years)

Grand total in five months: 8555 points. At this pace I will complete the project just in time for the 2011 ToEG challenge to start. I am not sure if that’s a good or bad thing… On a slightly more optimistic note, the points don’t tell the true story. A lot of my time in the last five months went into basing and converting which is now done for the entire project. I find that basing EPIC models takes about as much time per base as painting them. Moreover, I have left some of the “big & fun” items for the end of the project. So the remaining 7000 points include eight Titans or major war engines worth 3200 points. So I might just get done in the spring instead of late summer 2011…

Here are some more pics of the December update. Slaneesh Traitor Sentinels (which can also be used as Dreadnoughts in the Black Legion list if needed) and Slaneesh Cultist Fire Support.

ToEG December Summary

Happy New Years Everybody!

December was a horrible month in terms of painting progress. Between travel, vacation and work pressure I had a grand total of two evenings available to paint. The resulting output is consequently less than stellar.

I managed to complete the following models:

3 Khorne Dreadnoughts 150pts
3 Tzeentch Dreadnoughts 150pts

1 Nurgle Dreadnought (I temporary lost the other ones, this will be fixed in January) 50pts
15 Nurgle Mutants including command (the 9 Big Mutants are still in progress) ~250pts
6 Nurgle “hounds” (using Warhammer giant rats) 60pts

4 Slaneesh Traitor Sentinels (using old Eldar Warwalker) 100pts
4 Slaneesh Traitor Fire Support 100pts

So a grand depressing total of 860 points. Enough for the 500 points ToEG limit but far from satisfying.

I also made some more progress on the Mordheim building and painted a handful of Battlefleet Gothic fighters (Ork and Eldar).

The models are in varying states of drying (varnish, grass, etc.) so I will post pics during the next few days. Below are the different dreadnoughts for now.

ToEG – November Summary and Dreadnoughts

November has ended so here is the accounting. I managed to finish all Khorne models except those Land Transports which aren’t even designed yet (still waiting for inspiration). I also got a head start on some of the Iron Cult vehicles and two quick Iron Warrior Dreadnoughts at the last minute. The model count isn’t all that high but most of these were in the “big stuff” category. The total comes to a respectiable 1910 points.

Khorne:
1 Altar 150
1 Lord of Battle 400
3 Hellhound Tanks 150
6 Chaos Hounds 60
4 Blood Slaughterer 200
2 Greater Brass Scorpions 350
1 Khorne Objective

Iron Cult (Undivided)
8 Basilisk 400
2 Hydra 100
2 Iron Warrior Dreadnoughts 100

December is a short month as I will be traveling for the first and the last two weeks. During the small gap in between I wil try to finish the remaining Iron Cult models (Tank Company & Altar) and maybe get started on the Nurgle contingent.

ToEG – Khorne Lord of Battle

The big daddy is done. I am now done with the Khorne contingent for the Lost and the Damned. There are a few more infantry units for the Khorne World Eater army coming in but those will paint up quickly (more Berzerkers basically).

This is actually only one model, not two or three. The arms are magnetized to allow for the various weapon combinations.

ToEG – Iron Cult Artillery

With the Khorne contingent completed (minus Land Transporters), I am going to wrap up the Undivided Iron Cult units. The infantry is already done so this leaves the vehicles. These guys are supposed to be the Lost and the Damned “partner” to the Iron Warriors (my Black Legion Undivided contingent). The theme is a lowly cult of slaves and workers from the Iron Warriors forge worlds who have to make due with any salvage that they can get acquire. I am using a mix of imperial vehicles with lots of custom modifications. The rust colour theme ties everything together visually. I think this is one of those examples where miniature painting should NOT thrive for realism. The rust on these vehicles is not realistic at all – the patches are far too big and continuous. A real rusty vehicle shown at this scale would basically look continuously brown. I basically used a “human scale” distribution of rust patterns to give the visual effect of rust at the model scale. That gets the idea across which is ultimately what matters.

The formation includes two artillery batteries and two scratch-built Hydra flak tanks from spare parts (Rhino body, old Ork Tractor Cannon cut in half for the sides and some bitz as guns).

ToEG – Khorne Chaos Hounds

Just some doggies. Based on Warmaster Fleshhounds from the Daemon range with a more “mortal” paint scheme to distinguish them from the actual Epic Fleshhounds.

ToEG – Khorne Traitor Hellhounds

A small group of Hellhounds to reinforce the Khorne horde. Nothing fancy but I had the old models in my bitz box so why not use them.

ToEG – Khorne Altar

Another big model done for the Khorne contingent. The Altar is based on a Doom Blaster carriage, old Fleshhounds, a tongue depressor, Hirst Art flagstone, Warmaster Bloodletter and various 40k vehicle bitz.

ToEG – Khorne Greater Brass Scorpion

One small step at a time. I finished one of the two Khorne Greater Brass Scorpions. The model is a custom scuplt by the same artist who made the Blood Slaughterers. I add a few wires at the back to complete the cables for the tail gun. The paint scheme is very simple but was actually painful to do (lots of washing stages that had to be done in multiple steps for lack of ways to hold the model – its very fragile). The second one is almost done, a few more washes left and some details.

ToEG – Slaneesh Traitor Sentinels WIP

With the Khorne contingent nearing completion, I am starting to work on the basic colour scheme for the Slaneesh horde. My first effort was aborted when I ran out of Tentacle Pink paint and found that Games Workshop doesn’t make it anymore. After some trials I have now settled on Vallejo Squid Pink as a replacement.

These models are the trial for all the Slaneesh Knights, Titans and vehicles. A GW Liche Purple basecoat, manual highlighting with Vallejo Squid Pink and then some details in gold, black and green for the gemstones. I am using old plastic Eldar Wraithlords as Slaneesh Traitor Sentinels. They fit in very nicely with the other walkers of the Slaneesh horde.
