Epic Salamander Terminators

Finished up some more Terminators for my Salamander Chapter. The unit includes a (mildly) converted Librarian to round out the command choices (I already have a Captain and Chaplain for the other two squads). Nothing fancy as I had to match the style of the other models.

ToEG – Deathguard Plague Marines

More reinforcements for Papa Nurgle. I added a bunch of Plague Marines to my existing four models. The new models include a Plague Marine Lord. There are only two Rhinos because this really isn’t a legal formation. They can either be fielded as a 4 model “Cult Marine” upgrade for a Black Legion Retinue (with two Rhinos), as a dedicated 7 model Plague Marine formation in the EPIC UK Deathguard list (without Rhinos as that formation can’t have any), or as part of two mixed Plague Marine and Deathguard Marine formations in the TacComs Deathguard list (again without Rhinos). Chaos is confusing…

Empire Scroll Caddy

I finished up a model that has been on my painting desk for years. Very quick, nothing fancy but I wanted to get him off the table. It’s a literal interpretation of the “Scroll Caddy” concept for my Bogenhafen empire army. I am using a Mordheim Sisters of Sigmar Augur for my wizard in the army and she has two (now three) “Scroll Caddies”. I use those to mark how many dispel scrolls she has left. I will take some pics of the other two caddies soon. They are all old familiars carrying scrolls or books. For now, all I have is an old White Dwarf pic of part of my Empire army from a long forgotten Grand Tournament. You can just barely see the two other caddies on the front left. I will have to learn how to photograph larger 28mm units (and keep everything in focus).

Painting Balance 2010

It’s time to look back at the wargaming achievements of 2010. It was a fairly busy year for me in “real life” so my painting progress suffered accordingly. Nevertheless, I managed to paint 595 models (about 45 per month). The theme of 2010 was clearly Epic with 505 models completed. More minor contributions where made to my Battlefleet Gothic, Blood Bowl, Man-o-War and Mordheim collection. Separately, I also managed to complete 66 terrain pieces (mostly Mordheim items).

Unfortunately, the impact on the lead mountain wasn’t very impressive. Overall I purchased close to 1000 new models during year (80% of which for Epic). I did manage to sell a bunch of truly ancient Warhammer and Warhammer 40k stuff so the overall net gain is only 507 models. My painted to all ratio has therefore been slightly improved from 64% in January 2010 to 68% in December 2010. Current total (painted & unpainted) stands at 7027 models and 721 terrain pieces (of which 4618 and 659 are respectively painted).

Below are my progression over the last decade in terms of overall and painted model count, as well as the current status per gaming system.

ToEG – Final December Items (Nurgle Covens)

Here are the last items from December, after the flock has dried (and I found time to photograph). Two Mutant Covens and some “Chaos Hounds”. I am still working on the matching 9 Big Mutant bases that will bring both Covens to full strength. The Nurgle contingent is heavily themed on rats so I used Warhammer Plague Rats from the Skaven range for the “hounds”.

ToEG A year in review

So how am I doing in this Tales of Epic Gamers challenge? First of all, it has definitely achieved its goal of motivating me to keep chipping away on the big Lost and the Damned army. That’s a fantastic result for somebody like me who normally bounced from project to project. The plan in August was to complete about 11,000 points of EPIC LatD duringt the ToEG challenge, plus about 4,000 points worth of “left-over” models for their cousins in the Black Legion chaos list. Against that 15,000 points goal I have so far completed:

August: 965 points (but also based and converted the first half of the overall army)
September: 3520 points (mostly Khorne and a few other units)
October: 1300 points (mostly Undivided and some remaining Khorne units)
November: 1910 points (finished Khorne and most of Undivided, based/converted the other half of the army)
December: 860 points (random small stuff cleared off my desk, started basing/converting my Eldar, Adeptus Mechanicus and Squat armies for the next few years)

Grand total in five months: 8555 points. At this pace I will complete the project just in time for the 2011 ToEG challenge to start. I am not sure if that’s a good or bad thing… On a slightly more optimistic note, the points don’t tell the true story. A lot of my time in the last five months went into basing and converting which is now done for the entire project. I find that basing EPIC models takes about as much time per base as painting them. Moreover, I have left some of the “big & fun” items for the end of the project. So the remaining 7000 points include eight Titans or major war engines worth 3200 points. So I might just get done in the spring instead of late summer 2011…

Here are some more pics of the December update. Slaneesh Traitor Sentinels (which can also be used as Dreadnoughts in the Black Legion list if needed) and Slaneesh Cultist Fire Support.

ToEG December Summary

Happy New Years Everybody!

December was a horrible month in terms of painting progress. Between travel, vacation and work pressure I had a grand total of two evenings available to paint. The resulting output is consequently less than stellar.

I managed to complete the following models:

3 Khorne Dreadnoughts 150pts
3 Tzeentch Dreadnoughts 150pts

1 Nurgle Dreadnought (I temporary lost the other ones, this will be fixed in January) 50pts
15 Nurgle Mutants including command (the 9 Big Mutants are still in progress) ~250pts
6 Nurgle “hounds” (using Warhammer giant rats) 60pts

4 Slaneesh Traitor Sentinels (using old Eldar Warwalker) 100pts
4 Slaneesh Traitor Fire Support 100pts

So a grand depressing total of 860 points. Enough for the 500 points ToEG limit but far from satisfying.

I also made some more progress on the Mordheim building and painted a handful of Battlefleet Gothic fighters (Ork and Eldar).

The models are in varying states of drying (varnish, grass, etc.) so I will post pics during the next few days. Below are the different dreadnoughts for now.

Mordheim Smithy Upper Floor

I have been experimenting with new materials for my Mordheim buildings. Most of the tests were failures, so I settled back on tried and tested for the upper floor of the Smithy: MDF base and walls, coffee stirrer flooring, balsa wood beams, and pumice paste as texture filler.

The bottom floor is only missing debris and details (anvil, wheel barrows, etc.).

ToEG – November Summary and Dreadnoughts

November has ended so here is the accounting. I managed to finish all Khorne models except those Land Transports which aren’t even designed yet (still waiting for inspiration). I also got a head start on some of the Iron Cult vehicles and two quick Iron Warrior Dreadnoughts at the last minute. The model count isn’t all that high but most of these were in the “big stuff” category. The total comes to a respectiable 1910 points.

Khorne:
1 Altar 150
1 Lord of Battle 400
3 Hellhound Tanks 150
6 Chaos Hounds 60
4 Blood Slaughterer 200
2 Greater Brass Scorpions 350
1 Khorne Objective

Iron Cult (Undivided)
8 Basilisk 400
2 Hydra 100
2 Iron Warrior Dreadnoughts 100

December is a short month as I will be traveling for the first and the last two weeks. During the small gap in between I wil try to finish the remaining Iron Cult models (Tank Company & Altar) and maybe get started on the Nurgle contingent.
