Sassanids

The Sassanid Empire was the final dynastic stage of Persia before the rise of Islam. My collection is designed for Saga and could readily be used as a Parthian predecessor force as well. The figures are all from Aventine Miniatures in metal, with just the Elephants printed in resin. I chose a mix of bright pastel colours with just enough consistency to tie the army together while preserving the flamboyant style of pre-Islamic Persia.

Leaders: The Saga list only allows for a single option of a mounted Warlord with Cataphract armour on the horse. I have added a Personal Champion and a foot figure as a possible character for scenarios.

From left: Personal Champion, Scenario Character, Warlord.

Hearthguard: More Cataphract form the bodyguard for the Warlord. I also painted a second Cataphract unit of Parthian design to use this army for the earlier period.

The force also includes two Elephants with the second being converted to match the first I style.

King’s Elephant.
Converted elephant with extended cloth and figures to match first elephant in style.

Warriors: Like all Persian dynasties, the Sassanids made heavy use of horse archers so I included two dozen of those. Added to this are Sughdians in mounted or dismounted variants. I am using these to represent various mercenary forces available in Saga with a visual style that matches the overall force.

Levy: Levy Archers and Spearmen form the infantry bulk of the warband. These are painted in the same scheme but in more faded colours.

Finally, I made a set of baggage bases for specific Saga scenarios. This is my first army with desert/arid basing so my generic scenario/mercenary/terrain options don’t match.
