Papal States

The Italian Condottieri faction in Saga covers the tail end of the Age of Chivalry so I used figures appropriate for late 15th to mid 16th century. I have focused on the Papal States sub-faction but included enough units to cover all the other variants as needed. All models are from Perry Miniatures.

Heroes: The army can be led by all variants of Warlords – mounted, mounted with barding, and on foot. For some of these I have used figures from the War of the Roses range which had suitable late medieval/early renaissance clothing. I also added figures representing Papal Advisors and the Discipline status for the Condottieri board.

Warlords on horse, foot and barded horse. The left figure can also represent an (anachronistic) John Hawkwood.
Papal Advisors. The figures on the larger base can be removed to show the remaining advisors for the Papal States battleboard.
Discipline tracker for the Papal States battleboard. This tracks Rest, Shoot, Charge and Move activations until three are achieved in each turn.

Hearthguards: I have elected to use an (anachronistic) Papal Guard to represent this unit category. These come in mounted and dismounted configuration but are typically not the focal point of the Condottieri list.

Warriors: The Condottieri shines in this troop category with a wide variety of choices. I have assembled units for all different types, including the various specialty troops available only in sub-factions of the Condottieri list. The Papal States shields are custom decals I made using ChatGPT in the absence of any commercially available options.

Papal serjeants carrying large pavise shields with custom decals representing either the papacy or the personal heraldry of Pope Innocent VIII who held office at the end of the 15th century (1484–1492).
Papal archers. These are a special unit type available only to the Papal States sub-faction.
More archers in the odd chance that the Condottieri want to out-shoot the English!

Stradioti riders from the Balkan region serving as mercenaries in the Condottieri forces in the Venetian sub-faction (loaned to the Papal States on occasion no doubt).

Levy: After the rich selection for warriors, the levy category is fairly bare for the Condottieri. The exception is the “pope wagon” or more formally the Carroccio which offers a unique centrepiece.
